A young Howard County woman was killed yesterday afternoon when the car she was driving was struck by a tractor-trailer on U.S. 1 in Jessup, county police said.

Holly Atkins, 18, of the 8300 block of Granville Road in Jessup was driving a 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix east on Lincoln Drive near the community of Cedars about 4:40 p.m. and halted for a stop sign at the intersection with the 8000 block of Washington Blvd. (U.S. 1), police said.

Atkins then entered the boulevard and was attempting to turn north when a southbound 1996 International tractor-trailer struck the driver's side of the car, police said.

The tractor-trailer crossed the roadway and stopped in a grassy area next to the northbound shoulder.

Police said Atkins was trapped in the demolished car for at least an hour before county firefighters, using cutting tools, freed her body from the wreckage. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver, Jeffrey Jenkins, 43, of the 800 block of Lannerton Road in Essex, was not injured.

Police detoured traffic for more than two hours away from the scene of the crash, which remained under investigation.
