American Healing Arts Alliance Inc.: This nonprofit alliance of healing arts and science professionals and the general public offers health- and peace-building educational services. Needed are volunteers 18 years of age and older for committees for speaker programs, monthly and other events, fund raising, membership, publicity and marketing. Annapolis Harbor Master: Volunteers are needed to assist in the harbor master's office, provide information about boating in Annapolis Harbor, assist boating visitors with information about the City of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, primarily from May to Sept. 30. Anne Arundel CASA: CASA needs volunteers for Court Appointed Special Advocates and Friends of CASA. Each special advocate is screened and trained to make a difference in the life of an abused or neglected child. Extensive training is scheduled after potential volunteers are interviewed and screened. Friends of CASA are volunteers who assist with fund-raisers, or donate other talents and resources. Office assistants and board members are also needed. Court Appointed Special Advocate 35-hour training is Sept. 27 to Oct. 9 and is required of all new advocates. Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks' "Bark Rangers" are needed for County Dog Parks. People age 18 and older are needed to assist park staff at the four county dog parks at Quiet Waters, Broadneck, Bell Branch and Maryland City parks. Anne Arundel County Public Schools/ AVID Tutoring Program: The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Tutoring Program supports middle and high school students who might easily "slip through the cracks." During AVID's first year, tutors age 19 and older will be trained and paired with small groups of sixth- or ninth-grade students. Tutors show students how to solve problems and work with other students and serve as role models. Volunteers should commit to at least one semester tutoring in one of the AVID sites for a minimum of two hours per week, during regular school hours. Chrysalis House: The Crownsville facility provides addiction treatment services for women, including mothers, in a residential setting. Volunteers are needed to teach basic word processing, spreadsheets, and resume writing; help with computer maintenance and upgrades; building repairs and grounds maintenance; work in the child care center; and facilitate recreational activities for clients. Heaven's Gate Animal Rescue Limited: Heavens Gate is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue, care and placement of pets in need that promotes spaying and neutering of all pets as an alternative to euthanasia. Heavens Gate participates in PETsMART's Luv-A-Pet adoption program and also has a network of volunteer foster homes for the animals that are waiting to be placed for adoption. Volunteers age 18 and older (or younger with parental supervision) are needed to clean cages, be cat socializers, help with adoptions, and other tasks. Korean American Anne Arundel (KAAA) Service Center: The KAAA works to improve the health and lives of the Korean community in Anne Arundel County. Bilingual volunteers are needed to assist non-English speakers and explain how to best take advantage of county services. Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts: From 6 p.m. to midnight Sept. 12, "Arts Alive 5" needs volunteers for the tented gala under the stars. The event introduces guests to the arts being created and nurtured at Maryland Hall. Volunteers are needed for decorations/set-up Sept. 10-12, and on Sept. 12 as dinner "servers."
