School board to hold capital budget work session

The Howard County Board of Education will hold a public work session on the fiscal 2005 capital budget and the fiscal 2006--2010 capital improvement program at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

At 6:30 p.m., the board will hold a dinner meeting with the state delegation, County Council and county executive. The meeting will take place at Homewood School, 10914 Route 108, Ellicott City.

The board will hold a regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. Aug. 28 in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City. The afternoon and the evening session, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will start with a public forum, during which members of the public can address the board on any topic for which there is no formal public hearing process.

New-student orientation is starting today at HCC

Howard Community College will hold new-student orientation sessions from 6 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Friday in the college's Smith Theatre, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

First-time students are expected to attend. Parents are welcome.

Sponsors, donors sought for school-supplies effort

Prepare for Success, a community project to provide backpacks and school supplies to Howard County students from low-income families, seeks sponsors and donors.

Organizations and businesses interested in sponsoring a school and people who want to donate backpacks and school supplies should call Mike Clark, the project's coordinator, at 410-309-9695.

At-large members sought for schools advisory group

The Citizens Advisory Committee to the Board of Education seeks at-large members for the 2003-2004 school year. The group of citizens and representatives from local PTAs advises the elected school board.

The CAC sponsors educational programming for members and gives them the opportunity to study and have a say on curriculum, education policy, redistricting and budgets. The committee generally meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month in the boardroom at the Department of Education in Ellicott City. At-large members serve two-year terms.

Deadline is Sept. 30 to have student data withheld

The Howard County public school system has occasion to release information about students for public information purposes. The information, classified as "directory information," includes the student's name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, major field of study and participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received and the most recent previous educational agency or institution attended by the student.

The school system may also publish for public information purposes photographs of students involved in school activities.

In accordance with Maryland law, the school system will not disclose such information - with some exceptions - without permission of a parent or guardian. Parents and eligible students, ages 18 or older, have the right to refuse the release of any or all of this information.

Those who wish to refuse permission to release any or all of this information have until Sept. 30 to inform the Howard school system.
