Janet Martin Swank, a retired executive secretary and former Roland Park resident, died of congestive heart failure Wednesday at her daughter's home in Ruxton. She was 78.
She was born Janet Frey in Hanover, Pa., where she was raised. In 1944, she married J. Edward Martin, a vice president of Anchor Packing Co. in Philadelphia, and settled in Lutherville. He died in 1970.
During the 1960s, Mrs. Swank worked as an executive secretary for the Rouse Co., which then had its headquarters at Cross Keys. She later was a secretary at Alex. Brown & Sons from 1975 until 1981.
She was married that year to Thaddeus "Wally" Swank, a retired Maryland National Bank trust officer and investment counselor. He died this year.
The couple spent summers at a home they had built in Ocean City in 1983 and wintered at their condominium in the Washington Apartments in Mount Vernon Place.
Mrs. Swank was a member of Dunes Club in Ocean City, Hillendale Country Club and Baltimore Country Club.
She enjoyed golfing and playing bridge. She also liked attending the theater and concerts of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
Mrs. Swank was a communicant of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where funeral services were held Saturday.
Mrs. Swank is survived by a son, J. Edward Martin of Ruxton; a daughter, Holly M. Hamilos of Ruxton; a sister, Kathleen Stevens of Hanover, Pa.; four grandchildren; and 38 nieces and nephews.
