Public work session scheduled Aug. 26 on capital budget
The Howard County Board of Education will hold a public work session on the fiscal 2005 capital budget and the fiscal 2006--2010 capital improvement program at 4 p.m. Aug. 26 in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.
At 6:30 p.m., the board will hold a dinner meeting with the state delegation, County Council and county executive. The meeting will take place at Homewood School, 10914 Route 108, Ellicott City.
New-student orientations set Aug. 20 and 22 at HCC
Howard Community College will hold new-student orientation sessions from 6 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. Aug. 20 and 9 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Aug. 22 in the college's Smith Theatre, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.
First-time students are expected to attend. Parents are welcome.

CHADD support group is to meet tonight
Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) will sponsor a parent support group from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and on the second Wednesday of each month at the Loyola College Graduate Center, 8890 McGaw Road, Columbia.

At-large members sought for schools advisory group
The Citizens Advisory Committee to the Board of Education seeks at-large members for the 2003-2004 school year. The group of citizens and representatives from local PTAs advises the elected school board.
The CAC sponsors educational programming for members and gives them the opportunity to study and have a say on curriculum, education policy, redistricting and budgets. The committee generally meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month in the boardroom at the Department of Education in Ellicott City. At-large members serve two-year terms.
Advocacy training sessions on learning disabilities set
The Learning Disabilities Association of Maryland will conduct two advocacy training sessions. "You Are Your Child's Best Advocate" will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Howard County Mental Health Authority, 4785 Dorsey Hall Drive, Suite 111, Ellicott City.

Deadline is Sept. 30 to have student data withheld
The Howard County public school system has occasion to release information about students. The information, classified as "directory information," includes the student's name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, major field of study and participation in officially recognized activities and sports.
In accordance with Maryland law, the school system will not disclose such information - with some exceptions - without permission of a parent or guardian. Parents and eligible students, ages 18 or older, who wish to refuse permission to release information have until Sept. 30 to inform the school system.
