Katherine Ann Barth, 51, longtime state employee

Katherine Ann Barth, a longtime state employee, died of liver failure Monday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care in Towson. She was 51.

Born Katherine Ann Cardinal in Ontario, Canada, her family moved to Beltsville in 1964. She graduated from High Point High School six years later.

Ms. Barth moved with her daughter to Columbia and worked as a secretary at the University of Maryland, College Park and General Physics in Elkridge.

In 1992 she began working for the Maryland Division of Rehabilitation Services as a secretary before taking disability retirement in November, said daughter Jodi Caywood of Windsor Mill.

Ms. Barth received a liver transplant 13 years ago, but the disease continued to progress. Ms. Barth continued to work despite her illness. "She kept pushing herself," Ms. Caywood said.

Ms. Barth was cremated in accordance with her wishes and no services will be held.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by one granddaughter. Her marriage to Ronald Caywood of Luray, Va., ended in divorce.
