'Point' has it his way in Dave's Friend

Crossing Point broke with the pack but quickly sprinted away and was never challenged in winning yesterday's $50,000 Dave's Friend Stakes at Laurel Park.

Crossing Point, ridden by Mario Pino for trainer Ben Feliciano Jr., completed the six furlongs in 1 minute, 9.75 seconds, beating Take Achance On Me by three-quarters of a length.

"I've done a lot of work on this horse," Pino said. "He's tough to beat when he's on his game."

Even-money favorite Deer Run finished third.

Highly regarded Pioneer Boy pulled up. His injury is suspected to be a pulled suspensory ligament in the left front ankle.

Suspense continues

King Leatherbury's bid to become the third trainer in history to saddle 6,000 winners will have to wait until at least Thursday. None of his three starters on yesterday's 10-race card visited the winner's circle.

Private Cat finished third in the first race, Kharkov Lady was fifth in the third, and Flo was seventh in the finale.

Leatherbury needs one win to reach 6,000. He won No. 5,999 at Charles Town on Thursday with Wild Money Zone.

"I'm a little disappointed," said Mark Johnston, who rode all three horses yesterday. "I thought we'd get it today, and it would have been great since Leather is having a party tomorrow. It would have been nice to beat the deadline, but 5,999 wins is something to celebrate."

The Maryland mainstay's next scheduled starter will be Thursday - Wind Kiss in the fourth race.

Wilson No. 19 all time

With two victories yesterday, jockey Rick Wilson moved ahead of Rudy Baez for the 19th spot on the all-time win list with No. 4,876. Baez retired with 4,875.

Pino is 18th with 5,223.
