Bail was set at $500,000 yesterday in Howard District Court for a Columbia man charged with killing his young stepson last week.

Judge Pamila J. Brown also ruled that Marcus Dannon Owens, 32, of the 5200 block of Brook Way in Wilde Lake may not have contact with minor children or with his wife. He remained in custody at the Howard County Detention Center yesterday afternoon.

Owens is accused of killing his 2-year-old stepson, Kevonte, on July 30. He is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, child abuse, first-degree assault and second-degree assault.

After picking up his wife at work July 30, Owens took Kevonte to Howard County General Hospital, where the boy was unresponsive when he arrived, police said.

The boy died at 6 p.m. that day, and an autopsy found that he died of blunt-force injuries, charging documents say.
