THELMA DAGMAR FORUS GRANING was born January 18, 1911. She died in Denmark on July 30, 2003 where she was traveling with her daughter and staying with friends on her way to visit family in Norway. She was 92 years old, in good spirits and going forward. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband Rear Admiral Harald M. Graning, Assistant Surgeon General of the US Public Health Service. Thelma was an avid reader and gardener and she bowled in a weekly league. She was a member of Severna Park United Methodist Church and the American Legion of Severna Park. Thelma was an active traveler who had visited Spain, Minnesota, Oregon, Norway and California in recent years and enjoyed bus trips to Texas, Pennsylvania, New England and North Carolina as a member of SPUMC's XYZ club. She is survived by her sister, Evelyn Forus Melum of Bloomington, MN and by children Harald Graning and his wife Rachel of Westminster, MD, George Graning and his wife MaryAnn Farrell of Sylva, NC and Karen Gardner of Tigard, OR; by grandchildren Lena Graning Goelitz and her husband Jeffrey, Benjamin, Rolf, Evelyn, Charles and Rachel Graning, Mark Gardner, John Gardner and his wife Denise, Rob Gardner and his wife Shanna and Laura Gardner Hering and her husband Kris; and by great-grandsons Grant Gardner and Kyle Hering. Thelma Graning will be remembered by family, neighbors and friends as a warm and loving person, a model of successful aging. We gratefully celebrate her long and rich life. Services will be held at the Severna Park United Methodist Church (731 Benfield Rd.) on Thursday August 7 at 4 P.M. with a reception following. The family requests donations to the Church for the music program in lieu of flowers.
