West's 68 tops Senior Amateur qualifying

BETHESDA — BETHESDA - Marty West of Rockville produced five birdies on his way to winning the medal with a round of 32-36-68 yesterday in sectional qualifying for the U.S. Senior Amateur championship at Bethesda Country Club.

West, a nine-time Maryland State Amateur champion from Columbia CC, was making his debut in the event, having become eligible last month when he turned 55. In June, he had qualified for the U.S. Senior Open, where the eligible age is 50.

With five places available from among the 76 starters, Jamie Gough, Fairfax, Va., matched par with 35-35, despite bogeying his last two holes, Nos. 8-9. He was followed by Bob Morris, Great Falls, Va., 36-35-71; Jeffrey Weidig, Chevy Chase, 37-36-71; and Louis Rubino, Potomac, 34-38-72.

The championship will be held Sept. 6-11, at The Virginian Golf Club in Bristol, Va.
