Skating club to do Disney its way

Chesapeake Figure Skating Club will present "Disney Our Way" at 1 p.m. today at Ice World on Route 7 in Abingdon.

The club, consisting of 70 skaters this year, has four levels of skaters in the show, with the youngest being children as young as 4.

Snowplow Sam, a group of beginner skaters, will perform to the Disney song, "Cruella De Vil" from the animated film 101 Dalmatians. An adult coach will be in a costume for Cruella De Vil, and the rest of the skaters will be costumed as Dalmatian puppies.

The Basic 4-8 group (advanced basic skills), ages 4-8, is performing to the Disney song, "The Circle of Life," from the film, The Lion King. The skaters are dressed as jungle animals, including lions, giraffes, cheetahs and zebras.

The next level is the Freestyle group - advanced skaters who are able to show the audience single jumps and spins. This group is performing to the Disney song "Under The Sea" from the animated film The Little Mermaid.

An adult high-level group will skate to the orchestral version of the Disney song "Colors of the Wind," and will perform with ribbon sticks, Brown said.

This is the first year for synchronized skating, where the club skates together with youth and adults in team numbers, shoulder to shoulder, said Brown. The synchronized skate group will be performing to the Disney song "The Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride" from the animated film Lilo and Stitch.

There also are a variety of solo and duet performances. The members involved in the solos and duets range from children performing their first solo routine to advanced skaters who have accomplished the highest level achievement in figure skating - or the gold level tests.

Some Disney songs being skated to within these performances are "Part of Your World" by Heather Birschbach, Ice World's director; "A Whole New World" by Jill Pelovitz and Steve Keys; "When You Wish Upon A Star" by Katie Bylen; and "I've Got No Strings" by Savannah Chester.

There are two summer camp groups performing to the Disney song "Be Our Guest" from the animated film Beauty and the Beast, and "The Mickey Mouse Club March." Skating coaches and staff plan to skate to "Belle" from Beauty and the Beast.

The coaches involved in directing the show are Claudia Brown, Susan Dumler - who has taught for 23 years with a gold medal in dance testing - and Michelle Dumler.

"Claudia is the big cheese. She is the thought behind every move. ... She does the arrangements, costume selections, music selections and got fifth place in the senior nationals. She is a coach, senior level skater, and competitor ... and she really does a great job," said David Krotee, president the Chesapeake Skating Club.

Ice World will be holding an open house from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 14 for people interested in learning how to skate. Participants can rent the ice for two hours and receive group lessons and watch short performances. Information: Heather Birschbach, 410-612-1000.
