Javelin takes top honors in Governor's Cup race

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Larry Bulman of Bethesda skippered Javelin to two trophies in the St. Mary's College of Maryland Governor's Cup yacht race, the overnight competition from Annapolis to St. Mary's City that concluded yesterday.

The 30th running of the event attracted sailors from up and down the East Coast. Steady winds at 10 to 20 knots translated into some unusually fast times for the 150 boats competing in eight racing classes.

"We had wind all night," said Ruth Way, a crew member on the 31-foot Trinity, which captured first place in the multi-hull class.

Javelin, a Farr 52 captained by Bulman, also took advantage of the breezes to claim the Joseph Waldschmitt Best-in-Fleet Trophy and the Steven Bickell Memorial Trophy.

The Waldschmitt, the most competitive of the trophies, is presented to the winner of the class having the smallest corrected time interval between the first- and fifth-place finishers. The Bickell award goes to the crew showing the greatest improvement over the previous year.

Bulman was a winner in the first Governor's Cup race in 1974 with a first-in-class victory.

Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele was on hand to present the awards.

"We're going to make it a tradition that the governor or I will present the Governor's Cup trophies as long as we are in office," Steele said.

The race began at 6 p.m. Friday at the entrance to Annapolis harbor and finished in the early hours yesterday on the shores of the St. Mary's River.

"It's a true test of a sailor's skills - navigating the bay, staying up all night and dealing with the weather," said Jim Troutman, a crew member on the 39-foot Enigma, from Fairfax, Va., which placed first in the PHRF N class. "I don't know what else you could do to improve it."
