Schools urge registration for kindergarten

The Carroll County public schools urge parents of children who will turn 5 years old by Dec. 31 to enroll them in kindergarten for the 2003-2004 year as soon as possible.

The Maryland State Department of Education has changed the criteria for children to enter prekindergarten and kindergarten. Carroll County schools have a regulation that prohibits early entrance into kindergarten, but a waiver is being granted for the 2003-2004 school year to provide parents of young children enough notice to comply with the new phase-in dates.

At registration, parents must present a copy of a child's birth certificate or other legal document verifying the child's name and birth date; verification of residence; and the address the child will be transported from and to.

The birth dates required for enrollment are:

2003-2004 school year: 5 years old on or before Nov. 30, 2003. (5 years old on or before Dec. 31, 2003, in Carroll County.)

2004-2005 school year: 5 years old on or before Oct. 31, 2004.

2005-2006 school year: 5 years old on or before Sept. 30, 2005.

2006-2007 school year: 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2006.

Information: 410-751-3123 or 410-751-3009.
