CCC has new course in holistic medicine

Carroll Community College will offer a new three-credit course, Introduction to Holistic Health and Complementary Medicine this fall.

Students will receive mini lectures, participate in class activities, schedule three holistic health field trips on their own time, keep a journal, conduct library research, read two books from the mind-body-health reading list, meet guest speakers, and learn about possible careers in holistic health.

Three topics will be explored. In "Anatomy of Spirit," students will learn about subtle energy systems such as chi, chakras and meridians, and contrast the ancient philosophy of healing with the modern-day medical model of curing.

In "Mind/Body Medicine," students will locate current research findings on the benefits of self-care strategies (mindfulness, laughter, music, nutrition, herbs, exercise, social support, drumming, nature, meditation, guided imagery, essential oils).

"Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)," will feature guest speakers, health practitioners and medical doctors who are integrating CAM methods (acupuncture, massage, reiki, chiropractic, biofeedback) into their practice.

The course will examine the scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of holistic approaches to health.
