Blue Jays update

The Blue Jays surged into contention in the American League East in June, but they met with unexpected resistance in Detroit this week. The lowly Tigers scored a rare series victory by taking the first two games at Comerica Park before Toronto won, 8-2, in last night's series finale. The Blue Jays had lost four in a row before last night's win but remain one of the most potent offensive teams in the major leagues. First baseman Carlos Delgado leads the majors with 28 home runs and led American League first basemen in the fan balloting for the All-Star Game on the final day of voting yesterday. The Jays also have benefited from the breakout performance of Vernon Wells, but have largely been a one-dimensional team. The pitching staff ranks 10th in the league in ERA, and the defense ranks among the worst teams in baseball in fielding percentage.
