Helen Spaulding Barton, 86, teacher and volunteer


Helen Spaulding Barton, a former teacher and church gift shop volunteer for Trinity Episcopal Church, died Thursday in her Towson home. She was 86.

Born in DeLand, Fla., the former Helen Spaulding attended DeLand High School. She graduated from Stetson University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi.

She taught at several high schools before moving to Baltimore in 1961.

In 1940, she married Thomas Bryan Barton, who died in 1978.

Mrs. Barton was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Towson, where she served on the Altar Guild. She helped found Surprise Shop, the parish gift shop, and she volunteered there for more than 30 years.

Mrs. Barton was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed embroidery and needlecraft.

A service was held yesterday at Trinity Episcopal Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Barton Dunn of Glen Arm.; three sons, Thomas Bryan Barton Jr. of Oakton, Va., William Spaulding Barton of Hagerstown and Richard Charles Barton of Towson; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
