The Carroll County Farm Museum will hold its Traditional Arts Week from April 21-24, featuring artisans who will teach students 19th-century "forgotten arts."
The following classes will be offered:
Beginner blacksmithing: from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 21-24. Albin Drzewianowski will teach safety, fire building and general forging techniques. Students will make simple items such as S-hooks and nails. The cost is $225.
Woodcarving a Life-size Owl: from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 21-23 Jim Calder will show students how to carve a life-size owl. All materials will be included. Students should take a Dremel and Exacto knife or woodcarving tools. The cost is $225.
Broommaking: from 9 a.m. to noon April 21. Ralph Dinterman will help students make a broom like the ones sold in the Museum Gift Shop. All materials will be supplied. The cost is $20.
Theorem painting: from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 21. Dottie Arthur will show students how to make an 1800s fruit design picture. Theorem painting is oil painting on velvet material, using a combination of stencils and hand-painting. The cost is $60.
Beginner Shaker boxes: from noon to 4:30 p.m. April 21 and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 22. Keith Dickson will help students make a "nest" of five traditional Shaker boxes of cherry wood by hand-carving the fingers and finishing with copper nails. The cost is $125.
Quilting: from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22. Ellie Bennett will show students the basics of quilting and how to complete a square of white on white in a feather wreath design. The cost is $35 and a $6 materials fee.
Stenciled floorcloth: from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 22. Claretta Yingling will help students complete a floorcloth, approximately 2 feet by 3 feet, either in a traditional or a contemporary design. Prepared floorcloths, paints and stencils will be provided. The cost is $45.
Cross-stitch basket with lid: from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 23, for advanced students only, with Carolyn Freitag. Students will make a round basket with a fitted lid and embellished design. The cost is $40.
Open-hearth cooking: From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 23, with Pat Reber. Students will learn how to cook over an open hearth, and they will receive recipes of the late 1800s. Care and seasoning of iron pots will be included. Students will eat the food they have prepared. The cost is $35.
Advanced Shaker boxes: From noon to 4:30 p.m. April 23 and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 24. Keith Dickson will guide students in making a material-lined, carrier-type sewing box. Students should take material for the lining on the second day of class. The cost is $125.
Redware pottery: from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 23 and 24, with Ann Norwich. Students will apply slipware and sgraffito, based on traditional designs. They will also be able to hand-build traditional redware plates, using the drape method. Students should take a rolling pin and wear working clothes or an apron. The cost is $150, plus an additional $25 firing fee for up to 10 pieces, payable the day of class.
Spinning: From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 24 with Meredith Leech. Wheels will be available for the first two students registering; others must provide their own. This class is for beginning and advanced students. The cost is $20.
Carving a walking stick: From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 24. Jim Calder will show students how to carve a design of choice and finish a walking stick to take home. Walking sticks will be provided. Students need to take a trim knife or woodcarving tools. The cost is $100.
Garden weaving: From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 24, with Pat Brodowski. Students will make twig arbors, pea fencing and useful garden structures from twigs, working in the museum's Heirloom Garden, and take samples home. Students should dress in comfortable clothes and take pruning shears, gloves and twine. The cost is $15.
Registration is complete when payment has been received. Requests for full refunds must be received at least 10 days before a class. After that time, payments may be applied to a future class. A minimum number of students is required for each class to be held. Students may take a lunch.
