Pauline Fuhrman Whetzel, a former school cafeteria worker and community volunteer in the Annapolis area, died Thursday of respiratory failure at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was 83.
Pauline Walker was born in Baltimore County. Her family moved to the Waugh Chapel area of Anne Arundel County soon afterward. She attended and graduated from Anne Arundel schools.
In 1937, she married Henry J. Fuhrman; he died in 1979. She later wed Curtis D. Whetzel, who died in 1992, less than a year after they were married.
After raising a family, the Cape St. Claire resident worked at Cape St. Claire Elementary and Magothy Middle schools for about five years, preparing food and working at the cash register.
For about 15 years, she volunteered at Anne Arundel Medical Center, working at its snack bar and consignment shop.
She enjoyed needlework and was skilled in latch-hook, needlepoint, crocheting and hairpin lace.
About 12 years ago, she started a sewing club in Cape St. Claire. Women in the community made clothes and crafts and some of the items were donated to area charities.
About five years ago, she and two of her daughters began singing and leading sing-alongs at Annapolis-area nursing homes to entertain residents. They performed 1920s- and 1930s-era songs. They stopped when one of the trio, her daughter Marion W. Lipinski of Annapolis, became ill and died last year.
An active member of Cape St. Claire United Methodist Church since 1958, she served as president of the Women's Society, led church youth activities and was involved in fund raising.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the church, 855 Chestnut Tree Drive, Annapolis.
She is survived by a son, Jerry Fuhrman of Annapolis; three daughters, Elizabeth Deming of Berlin, Pauline D. "Lorie" Rawlings of Annapolis and Jane C. DeMaine of Conklin, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Donations may be made to Cape St. Claire United Methodist Church or the Critical Care Unit of the Anne Arundel Medical Center, AAMC Foundation, 2001 Medical Parkway, Annapolis 21401.
