Merrill C. Raikes Jr., a retired Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. manager and former Cedarcroft resident, died in his sleep Saturday at Nella's Incorporated at Crystal Springs, an Elkins, W.Va., nursing facility. He was 85.
Mr. Raikes, who was known as Jack, was born in Philippi, W.Va., and raised in Clarksburg, W.Va., where he graduated from high school.
He served in the Navy from 1936 to 1940 and in the Naval Reserve from 1942 to 1946, when he was discharged with the rank of chief petty officer.
A former resident of the Fernway section of Cedarcroft, Mr. Raikes went to work for the C&P; Telephone Co. in the 1940s. At the time of his 1982 retirement, he was division manager in the department of administrative services. He had been an Elkins resident since 1990.
He was a former member of University Baptist Church in Baltimore.
Services were held Wednesday in Elkins.
Mr. Raikes is survived by his wife of 39 years, the former Marylou Akers; a son, Merrill C. Raikes III of Ashfield, Mass.; a sister, Mildred R. Goldberg of Elkins; and a granddaughter.
