Some aggressive programs block pop-ups -- too well

I enjoy reading your column, and it has helped me out with computer problems many times. My question is how do you get rid of continual pop-ups?

I use Ad-Subtract from Intermute Inc., a pioneering force in the pop-up blocking industry that offers particularly easy stopping that can be turned on and off as needed.

Remember that many Web sites use pop-ups to serve up desired information as well as click boxes to request certain pages and such. So this software really does eliminate a whole lot of Web wheat along with the pop-up chaff. You can find the $30 program at www.adsub and a lot more detail at, although you won't be warned at either place that the quality of your Internet experience will be diminished even as the flood of nasty pop-ups fades.

The software not only wipes out pop-ups but also eliminates a lot of the banner and side panel ads that many Web sites offer.

You can turn Ad-Subtract on and off with a system tray icon, and it's a good idea to remember that you are missing a bunch of stuff when the ad phasers are set on "kill."
