Five-run 2nd, HRs by Roberts, Gibbons lift O's

The Orioles scored five runs in the second inning and took a 10-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox, who left Nomar Garciaparra, Manny Ramirez, Johnny Damon, Trot Nixon and Shea Hillenbrand in Fort Myers, Fla. Brian Roberts completed the second-inning scoring with a wind-aided, two-run homer off left-hander Casey Fossum, who hit Marty Cordova with the bases loaded and none out to force in the first run. Another run scored when Brook Fordyce grounded into a double play. Deivi Cruz doubled for a 3-0 lead, and Roberts hit his second homer this spring to chase Fossum. Jay Gibbons led off the third by homering off Ramiro Mendoza. Kevin Millar's sacrifice fly off Sean Douglass reduced the Orioles' lead to 6-1 in the fifth, but Cruz lined a two-run single off Ryan Rupe in the bottom half. Making his first start, Chris Richard added a run-scoring single in the inning. Kerry Ligtenberg, in his first appearance as an Oriole, allowed a run in the sixth and two homers in the seventh. Seven of 11 batters reached against him.

Who's hot

John Valentin: The heat's coming from under his collar after being hit for the second time this spring.

Deivi Cruz: Won't field like Mike Bordick, but not hitting like him, either.

Sidney Ponson: Threw three scoreless innings, striking out the side in the third. More bad news for the Red Sox: His price just went up.

Who's not

Sean Douglass: Bases were loaded more times than Otis the town drunk.

Kerry Ligtenberg: That's pronounced Light-up-berg.

Casey Fossum: Red Sox starter threw like Casey Kasem. At this rate, his ERA won't qualify for the top 40.
