The Baltimore area's eastern expansion continues. That's Far East when we're talking restaurants.
Suzie's Soba, the Asian noodle house and Hampden hangout, is expecting the birth of a sister restaurant. Owner Suzie Hong says Monday is the planned opening date for the new Suzie's Soba in the Munsey Building, 7 N. Calvert St.
At first, Hong says, the new downtown place will be open just for breakfast and lunch. Dinner hours will come later.
Breakfast items include berries with yogurt, French toast and blueberry pancakes ($5.50 each) and a variety of egg sandwiches ($4), with add-on ingredients such as grilled portobello mushrooms, sauteed Japanese eggplant, smoked salmon and fresh basil.
The lunch menu offers several salads, among them seaweed salad ($5) and steamed edamame, or Japanese soybeans ($5). There also are several sushi rolls ($8), Korean specialties ($10-$18) and, of course, lots and lots of Asian noodle dishes ($9-$14).
Hong says the downtown Suzie's Soba will seat 80 to 90 diners. Hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Fun, fresh, Japanese
Meanwhile, in Ellicott City, Sakura Japanese Steak and Seafood House has opened its doors in the Enchanted Forest Shopping Center. Manager John You says there are 14 hibachi grill tables - each seating 10 to 12 people - as well as a sushi-bar area that seats 30.
The grill dinners offer your preferred form of protein - from chicken ($13.95) to shrimp ($16.95) to steak ($14.95-$17.95). All are whipped up with stir-fried vegetables. An appetizer, onion soup, salad and rice are included in the price.
This is at least the fourth Japanese steakhouse to open in greater Baltimore in the last half year or so. Why this explosion? You think it's because they have food Americans like - served fresh, healthily and in a fun way?
"The chefs put on a little show," You says. "They do volcanos [flaming mounds of vegetables] and Japanese baseball [flipping morsels of cooked meat into the mouths of the diners]."
Sakura Japanese Steak and Seafood House is at 10040 Baltimore National Pike. It's open from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Taping 'Food Fight'
Speaking of putting on a show, folks from the Food Network were in town last week taping two segments of the coming Food Fight game show. One episode was shot inside Red Tapas; the other at Harbor Court Hotel.
For each show, two teams of two chefs competed with one another to create dishes with the surprise ingredient given to them at the start of the program.
The show premieres May 22 at 10 p.m. We don't yet know when the Baltimore episodes will air. Stay tuned.
