Board of Education to meet March 13 with student leaders
The Howard County Board of Education will hold a luncheon meeting with student leaders at noon March 13 in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.
The board also will hold a regularly scheduled meeting, which starts at 4 p.m. in the boardroom. The afternoon session and the evening session, which starts at 7:30 p.m., will begin with a public forum, when members of the public can address the board on topics for which there is no formal public hearing process. School board, PTA panel schedule meeting Thursday
The Howard County Board of Education will meet with the executive board of the PTA Council at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.
Math, science, technology fair reset Friday, Saturday
The Howard County Mathematics, Science and Technology Fair for middle and high school students, sponsored in cooperation with Shimadzu Scientific Laboratories, has been rescheduled for Friday and Saturday at Long Reach High School, 6101 Old Dobbin Lane, Columbia.
Judging for middle school projects will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday; for high school projects, from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. An open house is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, and the awards ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. in the school auditorium.
Local winners will advance to the Baltimore Science Fair on March 15 at Towson University. Winners of that fair will move on to the International Science and Engineering Fair, scheduled May 11 to 17 in Cleveland.
Suggestions are sought on name for high school
The Howard County public school system School Naming Committee is seeing suggestions from the community for a name for the county's 12th high school, which is to open in August 2005. The school will be across from Mount View Middle School.
Board of Education policy calls for schools to be named in terms of geographical areas of the county. Names should not be duplicated.

Leadership U seeks participants in new class
Leadership U, a student leadership program under the auspices of Leadership Howard County, is recruiting for its eighth class.
The program prepares high school students to be effective leaders in the community by exploring the inner workings of the county and hands-on community involvement in an issue of community concern.
The program will begin in August with a one-week interactive training experience, designed to teach leadership and team-building skills. As the students begin their junior year of high school, they will select an issue affecting the community and employ the skills they have acquired to address it.
Tuition is $400. Financial aid is available. Applications must be completed and returned by March 14. Fliers and applications are available in high school guidance offices and at www. leadershiphc.org.
Registration due by today for course on beekeeping
The Howard County Beekeepers Association will offer a Beginning Beekeeping Short Course from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays.
The course will be offered next week, March 18, March 25 and April 2, with a field day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 5, at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship.
The cost is $30 per family, for text and instructional materials. Registration is due by today.
