Because of yesterday's snow, the second day of the Harford County wrestling championships at C. Milton Wright was postponed after the conclusion of the consolation semifinals.
The consolation finals and the finals were rescheduled for noon today -- the last possible day to finish the tournament before tomorrow's state regionals. Forest Wiest, the county's supervisor of athletics, said the tournament will go on only if schools are open.
"We will finish the tournament sometime," said Wiest, who met with county coaches -- many openly disappointed with the decision -- to discuss their options for concluding the tournament. "There is a lot of concern among coaches. This is a lose-lose situation. But people have to understand that we just got off a state emergency and there could be another major snowstorm in the next 24 hours."
Wiest said that although the rest of the county athletic schedule was wiped out yesterday, he had gotten special permission from county superintendent Jacqueline Haas to try to conclude the wrestling because of the importance of the results on seeding for this weekend's regionals.
But with the storm intensifying and more snow sticking to the roads as the afternoon wore on, Haas decided the event should be postponed because of concern for the safety of the students and spectators in attendance.
