Author to discuss philanthropy with women's group

Community Notes appear Sundays and Wednesdays. To submit a notice, send e-mail to or fax 410-715-2816.The Women's Giving Circle of Howard County will hold its first meeting from 4:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. March 5 at Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville. Members, friends and the public are invited.

Tracy Gary, philanthropist and author of Inspired Philanthropy: Creating a Giving Plan, will discuss "The Emerging Role of Women's Philanthropy." A member of the Pillsbury family, Gary has founded more than 14 nonprofit organizations, including Resourceful Women, The Women's Foundation of San Francisco and the Changemakers Funds.

The Women's Giving Circle strives to create a community of female philanthropists and an endowment fund, and to provide grants to institutions and programs that address the needs of women and girls in Howard County.

Evening program tomorrow to focus on water resources

The League of Women Voters of Howard County will sponsor an environmental forum on Howard County's water resources at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia.

The program will focus on how the county acquires its drinking water from adjoining jurisdictions and from private wells that depend on a healthy and sustainable aquifer. Speakers will discuss the integrity of the systems that provide drinking water in the county, how sustainable they are in the face of growth and what plans are being made to ensure safe and abundant drinking water in the future.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions. Admission is free.
