Senior attack Josh Gerber (Perry Hall) scored a career-high six goals and freshman attack Andy Gallagher (DeMatha) debuted with five goals and an assist as UMBC (1-0) downed Mount St. Mary's, 16-7, in men's college lacrosse at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field.
Trailing 2-1 four minutes into the game, the Retrievers scored seven unanswered goals to take an 8-2 lead with 8:39 left in the second quarter. Gerber scored three goals and Gallagher had two during the run.
The Mount's Charles Hogg added a goal for an 8-3 halftime score, but Gerber opened the third quarter with his fourth and fifth goals for a 10-3 UMBC lead with 5:56 left in the quarter.
The Retrievers' Tim Flanagan made eight saves, seven fewer than Dave Lambour of Mount St. Mary's (0-1).
