Officer shoots man advancing with a knife

A Baltimore officer shot a man who police said moved toward them with a large knife as they responded to a complaint of aggravated assault in Northwest Baltimore about 7:30 p.m. yesterday.

Marc Sherrod, 41, of no known address, was lying on a couch at the residence in the 4000 block of Oakford Road when the two officers arrived, said Officer Troy Harris, a department spokesman.

Sherrod did not respond to commands to show his hand, Harris said. When he rolled off the couch, officers saw that he was holding a knife and ordered him to drop it, Harris said.

When Sherrod did not respond and began approaching the officers and three other people in the room, an officer fired two shots, one of which struck Sherrod in an arm, Harris said.

Sherrod, who police believe is the former boyfriend of a woman who lives at the house, was taken to Sinai Hospital, where he was in critical condition last night, a nursing supervisor said.

The officer who fired the shots was placed on administrative leave until an internal investigation is completed, Harris said.

Police did not immediately identify the officer.
