One dead, one hurt in Little Italy shooting

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A double shooting yesterday in Little Italy, a close-knit community known for its restaurants, left one man dead and another admitted to Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Police were not releasing the names of the victims, who were discovered shortly after 3:30 p.m. in a rowhouse in the 900 block of Eastern Ave. by officers dispatched to investigate a reported shooting.

One of the victims was found on the second floor with a single gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene, said Officer Nicole Monroe, a police spokeswoman.

The other victim was found on the first floor and was shot in the leg, Monroe said.

Officers found several other people at the house, but were not sure whether they lived there or had gone there after hearing shots, she said.

The yellow crime-scene tape at Eastern Avenue intersections with Albemarle and High streets and the presence of squad cars and detectives there, were uncommon sights in Little Italy, where homicides are rare.

People walking to their homes in the 900 block of Eastern Ave. looked surprised, as did some restaurant patrons and workers who gawked at the scene from windows. A few motorists slowed on Albemarle to inquire about the commotion.

Restaurant workers in Little Italy said five men -- all musicians -- lived in the house where the shooting occurred.

"It is uncommon to have shootings there," Monroe said of Little Italy.

The homicide was Baltimore's 27th this year, compared with 22 on the same date last year, Monroe said.
