Athletes of the Week

Tony Cole

Oakland Mills, indoor track and field

The junior won two individual events, anchored two winning relays and led his team to a second-place finish last Wednesday at the Ivan Walker Howard County championships.

Cole, an All-County football and outdoor track performer, barely missed breaking two individual Howard County records owned or shared by Kyle Farmer, a former Scorpions standout now at the University of Florida.

Cole's 55-meter time of 6.3 seconds was one-tenth of a second off the county mark, and his 36.7 in the 300 was 1.1 seconds off the county record.

He also anchored the winning 800 relay (1:36.3) and the winning 1,600 relay (3:37.3). The 1,600 time was one-tenth of a second off the meet record.

Cole was the Class 1A outdoor state champion in the 100 and was part of the state champion 400 relay team. He finished second in the state 55 indoors last season.

Dani Kell

Roland Park, basketball

The 6-foot junior guard scored 16 points Sunday to lead the No. 8 Reds to a 52-47 upset of then-No. 5 Institute of Notre Dame. In three games last week, she compiled 52 points, 18 rebounds and five assists.

A Street & Smith's preseason honorable mention All-American, Kell scored 20 points, including six three-pointers, and grabbed seven rebounds in a 48-40 loss to No. 14 Mercy. She also had 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists while playing three quarters in a 61-42 victory over Mount de Sales.

Kell is an Amateur Athletic Union veteran who last summer helped the Hurricanes' 15-and-under team finish third in the state and reach the round of 16 at the junior nationals in Washington.
