Sister Ambrose Maxwell, 90, nursing supervisor

Sister Ambrose Maxwell, a retired nursing supervisor and member of the Roman Catholic order of Daughters of Charity, died of a stroke Sunday at the order's Emmitsburg retirement residence, Villa St. Michael. She was 90.

Born Margaret Frances Maxwell in Baltimore, she was raised on South Luzerne Avenue in Canton. She was a 1930 graduate of Seton High School and attended St. Joseph's College in Emmitsburg before entering the order in 1931, taking the name of Ambrose.

She earned a nursing degree at Catholic University of America and a master's degree from St. John's University in Jamaica, N.Y.

She was former director of nursing at then-St. Agnes Hospital in Southwest Baltimore and the Jenkins Memorial Home on Caton Avenue, among other assignments for her order. She also worked for her order's hospitals in New York, Virginia and Michigan.

In the 1940s, she taught at St. Joseph Parochial School on West Lee Street in Otterbein.

From 1982 until 1992, when she retired, she was the nurse supervisor at Villa St. Michael.

A funeral Mass was offered Wednesday in Emmitsburg.

She is survived by a nephew and six nieces.
