Bucs give Kiffin a three-year extension

THE BALTIMORE SUN

TAMPA, Fla. - The Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin a three-year contract extension, ending chances that he'd become coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

The extension comes two days after the Buccaneers granted the 49ers permission to interview Kiffin, 62, to replace the fired Steve Mariucci.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Kiffin was to have met 49ers general manager Terry Donahue today.

Kiffin has been Tampa Bay's defensive coordinator the past seven seasons. He has been an assistant with six NFL teams since 1982.

Financial terms of the extension weren't disclosed by the Buccaneers.
