Ryland Moore Jr., a retired Westinghouse Electric Corp. engineer, died Saturday of a respiratory ailment at the Blakehurst Life Care Community in Towson. The former Roland Park resident was 83.

Mr. Moore retired in 1986 as a senior engineer at Westinghouse, managing the Hunt Valley division's design and engineering services. He was formerly an engineering aide at Pennsylvania Water & Power in Safe Harbor, Pa.

Born in Baltimore and raised on Chelsea Terrace, he was a 1938 graduate of Polytechnic Institute. He received a degree in electrical engineering from the Johns Hopkins University in 1954.

During World War II, he was a lieutenant in the Army and served in the Philippines.

Active in the Cub and Boy Scouts, Mr. Moore was committee chairman of Troop 9 at Roland Park Presbyterian Church. He was a former membership chairman of the Arthritis Foundation of Maryland and a board member of the Schenley School in Roland Park.

He was a former business manager of Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church, Woodbrook Lane and Charles Street, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. Mr. Moore served on the building committee for the church and was a member of its board of elders.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, the former Marilouise Pennington; three sons, Richard Hanson Moore and Robert Emory Moore, both of Baltimore, and John Ryland Moore of Trappe, Pa.; a daughter, Barbara Ann Moore of Parkton; and seven grandchildren.
