Hilde Rothschild Schweitzer, a retired social worker who fled to Baltimore from the Nazis in 1936, died Jan. 19 of kidney failure and liver disease in Cambridge, Mass. She was 84 and had lived for many years in Mount Washington.

Born in Frankfurt, Germany, she had studied to be a teacher in Berlin during the 1930s, when her father and sister died. In 1936, she joined her mother in Baltimore, and in May 1940, she married Manfred Schweitzer, who survives her.

Mrs. Schweitzer became a U.S. citizen in 1945. She worked for several years as a nursery school teacher before beginning her career in the late 1940s as a social worker for the Jewish Family Services of Baltimore, an agency of The Associated: Jewish Community Federation.

She earned a master's degree in social work in 1958 from the University of Pennsylvania and retired in 1984.

A memorial service is planned in Baltimore in the spring.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Thomas Schweitzer of Cambridge, and two grandchildren.
