Charles F. Barbour Sr., 94, aerospace engineer

From 1948 to 1966, he was an engineer for the Glenn L. Martin Co. in Middle River. Family members said he helped create the training simulator for the Apollo space missions. He later worked for Boeing in Morton, Pa., and retired more than 30 years ago.

Born on a family farm in Somerset County, Pa., he was raised in New Jersey and studied engineering at Drexel University.

Active in Scouting, he formerly led Troop 397 in Fallston and Troop 801 in northern Baltimore County. In the early 1950s, he helped organize the Harford County Little League.

A funeral Mass was offered Thursday.

His wife of 60 years, the former Gertrude A. Hassler, died in 1997. A son, Charles F. Barbour Jr., died in 1989; and a daughter, Gertrude A. Kidd, died in 2001.

Survivors include a son, John J. Barbour of Martinez, Ga.; two daughters, Sarah B. Myers of Fallston and Veronica E. Birmingham of Landenberg, Pa.; a brother, David Barbour of Scranton, Pa.; two sisters, Katherine Haulenbeek of Maple Shade, N.J., and Sarah Cramer of Moorestown, N.J.; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
