Barbour, Charles F.

On January 20, 2003, CHARLES FRANCIS JIMMY BARBOUR, of Burlington, NJ, formerly of Martinez, GA and Fallston, MD died at the Masonic Home of New Jersey. Husband of the late Gertrude A. (Hassler) Barbour; father of Sarah Barbour Myers, Veronica E. Birmingham, John J. Barbour and the late Gertrude A. Kidd and Charles F. Barbour, Jr.; brother of Katherine Haulenbeek, Sarah Cramer and David Barbour. Also survived by 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Barbour returned to high school at the age of 21 and later attended Drexel University in the 1920s. He retired from the Helicopter Division of Boeing Morton, PA in 1970 after 4 years of service and was a self employed landscaper from 1966 until 1970. From 1948 until 1966 he worked in the Aerospace Division of Lockheed-Martin, formerly Glenn L. Martin in Baltimore, MD where he developed the first training simulator for the original Apollo Space Mission. He was also instrumental in developing the Sea Plane used by the United States Military. During the 1930s and 1940s he worked for Bendix and RCA in Camden, NJ and owned a sewing factory in Coopersburg, PA. Mr. Barbour was involved with the Boy Scouts of America, Troops 397 and 801 in Baltimore, MD and the Harford County Recreation Council, where he assisted in creating and setting up the Little League. He was a member of the Blue Ribbon Committee of the Harford County Board of Education, where he was instrumental in salary and wage negotiations on behalf of the teachers. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 20 years and a member and 32nd degree Mason of the Audobon Scottish Rite Lodge #116 in Parkside, NJ since 1941. He had also been an active member of various Catholic parish organizations including St. Marks Fallston, MD, St. John, Hydes, MD, Homestead and Lakeland, FL and Martinez, GA. Viewing will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 23 at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 315 N. Constitution Ave. New Freedom, PA followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 12:00 Noon.
