The Ravens will have a vacancy to fill on their coaching staff.

Mike Smith, the team's first-year linebackers coach, was hired yesterday as the defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars, a league source said. An announcement is expected today.

Smith rejoins newly hired Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio, who was the Ravens' linebackers coach from 1999 to 2001, when Smith, 43, was the team's defensive assistant. Smith joined the Ravens after 12 seasons at Tennessee Tech.

Former Ravens defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis is scheduled to name his coaching staff for the Cincinnati Bengals today and will not take any current Ravens assistants. Donnie Henderson, who had been a candidate for the Bengals' defensive coordinator opening, will remain the Ravens' secondary coach.

The Ravens expect to fill the opening by next week. Another source said Hall of Fame Chicago Bears linebacker Mike Singletary has been contacted by the Ravens about becoming their linebackers coach.

Also yesterday, the Jaguars hired Bill Musgrave, 35, as offensive coordinator, a source within the league told the Associated Press.

Musgrave is a former NFL quarterback who spent time with the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos. He spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator at Virginia, and before that was quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. He resigned as coordinator four games into the 2000 season.
