Boy, 10, rescued from lake is released from Shock Trauma

THE BALTIMORE SUN

OCEAN CITY - A 10-year-old rescued after falling through ice on a partially frozen man-made lake was released yesterday from Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was flown Sunday evening after being pulled from the water.

Nicholas McLoota's 8-year-old playmate Sam Wilkinson died when both boys fell into the water at Northside Park about 5:30 p.m. while chasing a ball across the ice, Ocean City police said. A police officer and paramedic jumped into the water and pulled out Nicholas, but Sam was submerged for more than an hour before rescuers found him.

Their parents had been watching an indoor lacrosse league practice at the park's recreation center. An Ocean City police spokesman said the lake is about 100 feet wide and between 6 and 20 feet deep.
