In His 30 years with the Veterans Administration, he served as Chief of Staff, Director of the Eastern Area and Director of the Detroit, Michigan Regional Office. Coronis, George E.
On January 15, 2003, GEORGE E. CORONIS age 86 of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Baltimore. Mr. Coronis was born in Wierton, WV, the son of Ernest and Paula Coronis. He served in the 8th Air Force as an engineer and top turret gunner on B-17. Anti-aircraft missiles shot down his plane on his 25th mission and the Germans took him prisoner. He was awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Clusters, the Purple Heart, and the Ex-Prisoner of War Medal. Mr. Coronis was a member of D.A.V., V.F.W., the American Ex-Prisoner of War Chapter, and the 8th Air Force Historical Society. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Orler) Coronis of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one daughter, Carol Ann Morris of Mt. Pleasant, SC; four grandchildren, Peter, Bridget, Heather and Katie; one sister, Helen C. Callas of Steubenville, OH; two great-grandchildren, Elliot and Alessandra Bullen. He was past commander of the Maryland Commandry #1.
