THE BALTIMORE SUN

Obrecht Road should stay as it is

I was saddened to read in the Jan. 15 Carroll County section of The Sun that "improvements" are planned for the Obrecht Road ("5 acres brought for widening of Obrecht Road").

At present the road is, for the most part, a fairly straight two-lane highway past some new developments and some fields that will probably shortly be developments. As it goes westward towards Route 97, however, it curves and dips through woodland in the wonderful way that old country roads do.

One of the reasons that many of us live in Carroll County is because we love the country and country roads like Obrecht, and one of the reasons that we voted for our present slate of commissioners is because we wanted to curtail, if not stop, development.

The Sun tells us that Mr. Primoff gave land "in lieu of future development considerations." The straightening of Obrecht Road will, as the night follows the day, lead to more development.

The commissioners were elected to control our growth. Leaving the Obrecht Road alone will do that.
