Delray Eldridge on the boards and Terrell Ingram's defense on Mitch Guest were the key factors in host Old Mill's mild upset of No. 17 Glen Burnie, 60-49, in Anne Arundel County boys basketball last night.
Eldridge, a 6-foot-3 senior forward, scored eight of his team-high 14 points and grabbed seven of his game-high 11 rebounds in the second half after a rather sloppy first half by both teams.
Ingram, a 6-1 sophomore who finished with eight points and seven rebounds, also did an excellent job defensively on Guest, the county's leading scorer.
Guest had a game-high 23 points, one above his average, but Ingram held him to three field goals in the second half.
"We thought [Guest] would get his points, and Terrell did a great job defensively," said Old Mill coach Greg Smith. "[Ingram] made him shoot over top of him and didn't let him get many good looks or take the ball to the basket."
By taking the game on their home court in Millersville, the Patriots (8-3 overall, 5-1 county) took over second place in the league while the Gophers (8-2, 4-2) lost their second in a row.
The Gophers, who lost, 60-50, to 5-6 Severna Park on Tuesday night, played without their 6-7, 330-pound junior center, Brandon Albert, again last night. Albert had missed a game with a left knee injury suffered last week against Broadneck but attempted to come back against Severna Park.
"He tried to play against Severna Park, but it swelled up pretty bad and he's going to the doctor's Tuesday," said Gophers coach Mike Rudd, whose team defeated Old Mill, 68-65, in a holiday tournament. "I'm not making excuses, but obviously we miss him. We're just not putting the ball in the basket. How bad did we shoot tonight?"
The Gophers hit just 16 of 65 from the field (25 percent) while Old Mill was 26-for-60 (43 percent) - but that included 17-for-29 shooting (59 percent) in the second half.
With their 84-44 win over Broadneck last night, the No. 6 Annapolis Panthers (10-1, 6-0) maintained their league lead. Annapolis beat Old Mill by 10 last week in what was their only meeting of the season.
"We're out for Annapolis, top contender for the No. 1 team," said Eldridge, whose rebounding enabled the Patriots to take a 39-29 lead after three periods. "It's our goal to get to the county championship."
