2001 Francis Coppola Diamond Series Chardonnay ($15). For a celebrity, director Francis Ford Coppola makes some mighty good wines. California chardonnays, as a group, are hardly my favorite wines, but this one rises above the pack to display admirable balance and appealing flavors of apple, lemon, nuts, pear and a hint of banana. The oak is well-integrated - in contrast with many in its peer group. Serve this wine with salmon, ham or chicken.
