Paper preservation to be topic of lunch at historical society

The Historical Society of Carroll County will hold its monthly box lunch talk at noon Tuesday at Church of the Ascension, 23 N. Court St., Westminster.

Catherine Baty, the society's curator of collections, will discuss paper preservation - why paper deteriorates and how to handle and preserve paper artifacts and documents.

Participants should take a lunch. Beverage and dessert will be provided. Admission is $2 for nonmembers; free for historical society members. Reservations are recommended.

Volunteer fire companies to be saluted at fete Jan. 19

The Historical Society of Carroll County will salute the volunteer fire service at its annual Carroll County Birthday Celebration on Jan. 19.

"Celebrating the History of Carroll's Volunteer Fire Service" will feature fire and rescue equipment in the parking lot as well as indoor displays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Best Western Conference Center in Westminster.

Guest speakers will discuss the fire service and its history in Carroll County. Invitations have been sent to Carroll's 14 volunteer fire companies, as well as elected officials, businesses and public service organizations.

The public is welcome. Refreshments will be served. Rain/snow date will be Jan. 26.
