ANGELS: Announced that they have moved season opener against Rangers from April 1 to March 30.

BRAVES: Signed SS Rafael Furcal, 2000 National League Rookie of the Year, to one-year, $2.2 million contract.

BREWERS: Signed free-agent P Dave Mlicki, who had been with Astros, to one-year contract. Signed P Mike Buddie to minor-league contract with invitation to spring training. Named Jim Bathey assistant vice president of ticket sales. Named Fernando Arango central and north Florida scout.

INDIANS: Named Derek Shelton hitting coordinator.

MARINERS: Announced that they received permission from commissioner's office and players association to open spring training on Feb. 9 because of their season opener against Athletics in Tokyo.

KENTUCKY: Named Ron Hudson offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Paul Dunn offensive line coach and running backs coordinator and Joker Phillips recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach.

MASSACHUSETTS: Announced basketball F Stephen Briggs will return to the team Jan. 17 after he was dismissed for an unspecified rules violation in October.

NAVY: Announced that senior DT Derek Jaskowiak will play in 2003 Hula Bowl, set for Feb. 1 in Maui's War Memorial Stadium in Hawaii.

NEW ORLEANS: Named Jim Miller athletic director.

NORTH CAROLINA: Hired Michael Burnett as assistant men's lacrosse coach.

OREGON: Announced that RB Onterrio Smith and TE George Wrighster will forgo their seniors seasons and make themselves available for NFL draft.

PENN STATE: Announced basketball G Melanie Croser has won an appeal of her NCAA suspension for unsanctioned summer league in Australia and is eligible to play immediately.

RICHMOND: Announced that G Jason Morton has left men's basketball team.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Named Jappy Oliver defensive line coach.

SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI: Named David Warner wide receivers coach.

TENNESSEE: Announced resignation of offensive line coach Mike Barry.

TOWSON: Announced that senior Zak Smith was named to 2003 Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook preseason All-America first team. Senior Danny Cocchi was named to second team. Senior defenseman Adam Baxter (Severna Park) was named to third team. Senior Ryan Obloj was honorable mention.

UCLA: Named Larry Kerr defensive coordinator.

WEST VIRGINIA: Promoted linebackers coach Jeff Casteel to defensive coordinator. Casteel will continue as linebackers coach.

CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE: Named Chris Rudge chief executive.

U.S. SOCCER FEDERATION: Announced that F Shannon MacMillan was voted top player U.S. women's soccer team for 2002, and under-19 captain Lindsay Tarpley was voted young female Athlete of the Year.

BURN (MLS): Moved home games from Cotton Bowl in Dallas to Dragon Stadium in Southlake, Texas.
