Yolande Gregory, 89, ER nursing supervisor

Yolande Gregory, a retired hospital emergency room nursing supervisor and community volunteer, died Monday of congestive heart failure at University of Maryland Medical Center. The Dundalk resident was 89.

Born Yolande Chaney in Baltimore and raised on Asbury Road in Mount Washington, she was a graduate of Western High School. She earned a degree from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1935.

She was a nurse at the former Glenn L. Martin Co. aircraft plant in Middle River during World War II. She worked for 32 years at what was then University Hospital, retiring about 25 years ago.

She had been a volunteer with the American Civil Liberties Union's Charles Village office since 1987, and won its Jack Levin Volunteer Service Award in 1995.

"What a spirit she had," said Susan Goering, the Maryland ACLU executive director. "She was the matriarch of our office. She was a willing spirit. It was great to come into work when she was here."

Mrs. Gregory was a volunteer with Physicians for Social Responsibility, Jobs with Peace and Notre Dame Mission Volunteers-AmeriCorps, the latter in the Locust Point section of South Baltimore.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 18 at Patapsco United Methodist Church, 7800 Wise Ave., Dundalk, where Mrs. Gregory was a member.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, William J. Gregory, a retired Army staff sergeant; two sons, Dr. Arthur Milholland of Silver Spring and Terence Milholland of Frisco, Texas; three daughters, Gail Farag of Los Angeles, Kathy Hunter of Tampa, Fla., and Barbara Plante of Mount Airy; a sister, Corabelle Flowers of Cockeysville; and eight grandchildren. Her marriage to Arthur Milholland ended in divorce.
