Ravens roster breakdown

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Quarterbacks

Jeff Blake: Unrestricted free agent who is expected to receive an incentive-laden offer from the Ravens.

Chris Redman: Will have back surgery and should be able to return fully recovered next season.

Anthony Wright: Probably will have to compete with a free agent or draft choice for roster spot.

Running backs

Jamal Lewis: Broke the stereotype by gaining 1,327 yards - 37 yards off his franchise record - only a year after undergoing reconstructive knee surgery.

Alan Ricard: Projected to be a future Pro Bowl performer by coaching staff.

Chester Taylor: Sixth-round pick solidified himself as the team's third-down back.

Sam Gash: Rarely used 11-year veteran could be brought back for positive locker-room influence and as insurance for Ricard.

Dameon Hunter: Little-used rookie will have to compete for a roster spot in training camp.

Receivers

Travis Taylor: Up-and-down season has become routine for this former first-round pick.

Brandon Stokley: Free agent who could return since his injury-prone career will limit his value.

Randy Hymes: Undrafted rookie had breakout game in Pittsburgh and figures highly in next season's plans.

Javin Hunter: Rookie season was cut short by four-game drug suspension.

Ron Johnson: Fighting to get confidence back; will have to fight for one of last roster spots.

Milton Wynn: Fringe player who has athleticism.

Jeff Ogden: Little-used veteran won't be asked back.

Tight ends

Todd Heap: First-year starter had breakout season and has become the Ravens' best downfield weapon.

Terry Jones: Fifth-round pick is a fine complement to Heap and has tremendous potential.

John Jones: Third-year veteran rounds out the Ravens' deepest group.

Offensive linemen

LT Jonathan Ogden: Perennial Pro Bowl talent is in a class by himself.

LG Edwin Mulitalo: Free agent will be offered market value by the Ravens, who are confident about their chances on keeping him.

C Mike Flynn: High cap number shouldn't block his return; may move to left guard if Mulitalo is not re-signed.

RG Bennie Anderson: Second-year starter needs to continue his development.

RT Ethan Brooks: Struggled at times, but team is considering re-signing him as the starter.

G/C Casey Rabach: Top-notch backup who could become the starting center if Flynn moves to guard.

T Damion Cook: Good athlete who has an upside for a team known for developing unknown linemen.

T Lawrence Smith: See Damion Cook.

G/T Jason Thomas: Versatile reserve can play everywhere on the line.

G Mike Collins: Unknown reserve has potential and has shown a mean streak.

Defensive linemen

DE Adalius Thomas: Restricted free agent might draw interest but needs to become more consistent.

NT Kelly Gregg: Overachieving and undersized inside player who survives with leverage.

DE Tony Weaver: Second-round pick may have been the team's best rookie this season.

DE Michael McCrary: One of the league's best pass rushers is expected to retire.

NT Maake Kemoeatu: Undrafted rookie came out of nowhere to become a cog in the middle.

DE Riddick Parker: Strong pass rusher who took advantage of playing time opened up by the season-ending injury to Marques Douglas.

DE Marques Douglas: Missed last 11 games with a knee injury.

DE David Nugent: Might not be able to stick around as team continues to upgrade line.

Linebackers

Ray Lewis: Is there any question whether he can return to his All-Pro form next season?

Peter Boulware: Pro Bowl performer will get the bull's-eye off his back once Lewis returns.

Ed Hartwell: First-year starter matured faster because he had to take on more responsibility in Lewis' absence.

Cornell Brown: Strong at the point of attack and should return since he won't have high demand in free agency.

Bernardo Harris: Eight-year veteran was stout in filling in for Lewis and is expected to be extended offer to return as backup.

Bart Scott: Undrafted rookie will have a role on special teams and in passing situations.

Shannon Taylor: Restricted free agent might not fit into team's future plans.

Secondary

CB Chris McAlister: High-priority free agent will either be signed to a long-term deal or be slapped with the franchise tag this offseason.

CB Gary Baxter: Could stay at cornerback or move to safety based on team's offseason acquisitions.

S Ed Reed: Impressive first-round pick is primed for a Pro Bowl career.

S Will Demps: Undrafted rookie showed nose for the ball but hit the wall in December.

S Anthony Mitchell: Came on late when he reassumed his starting job from Demps and could be easily retained as a restricted free agent.

CB James Trapp: Solid nickel back has been bogged down by injuries, making it unlikely for him to return.

S Chad Williams: Surprising sixth-round pick was an impact player as a dime back and on special teams.

CB Alvin Porter: Struggles put him in the doghouse, but coaches still see potential.

S Ray Perryman: Showed in last two games that he has good feel for special teams.

CB Tom Knight: Former first-round pick could be a find if he recovers from a hamstring injury next year.

CB Robert Tate: Six-year veteran doesn't have the cover or return skills to warrant a return.

Special teams

K Matt Stover: Has high cap number, but success of older kickers has increased his chances of staying.

P Dave Zastudil: Fourth-round pick was reliable, placing 31 of his 81 punts inside the 20-yard line, second best in the league.

RS Lamont Brightful: Sixth-round pick showed flashes, averaging 16.1 yards on punt returns and 20.6 yards on kickoff returns.

LS Joe Maese: Dependable and consistent play warrants no change.
