Fowler Sr., Richard L.

RICHARD LOUIS FOWLER SR., 88, of Baltimore, formerly of Yonkers, NY., died December 28, 2002 in Stella Maris Hospice at Mercy Hospital Baltimore, MD. He was born August 2, 1914 in Yonkers, NY., the son of William Arima and Mary Catherine (Kenny) Fowler. He was preceded in death by two brothers William George and Charles Francis Fowler Sr., and his wife Alta Harriet (Fredrickson) Fowler. During WWII he moved to Baltimore and worked in the tool and die department of Martin Marietta in Essex, MD.; then involved in airplane manufacturing for the war effort. Following the war he and his wife opened a roadside restaurant Fowlers Frozen Custard in Halethorpe, later moving it to the Arbutus, MD. area. At the age of 46 he began his education at the recently opened Catonsville Community College, and then completed his education at Towson University, graduating in 1964 and beginning a new career as a teacher teacher in the Baltimore County school system. He later returned to obtain his M.A. degree from the same University. He retired from teaching in 1979. He was a frequent attendee of the ongoing annual Enlow Family Reunions held in Garrett County, MD. each June. He is survived by two sons Richard L. Fowler Jr. of Miami, FL., Jeffrey Harry of Baltimore, MD., one daughter Audrey Alta of Baltimore; four grandchildren, Laura Marie Fowler-Myers, of Jessup, MD., Karen Michelle and Joshua Lee Richard Fowler all of Baltimore, Jennifer Maureen of Burbank, CA., and one great-grandchild Haley Marie Myers of Jessup, MD. Viewing will be at the MacNabb Funeral Home on Tuesday December 31, 2002 and Wednesday January 1, 2003 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M. Sawyer, Bettie Marable Dowda

With her family gathered at her bedside, BETTIE MARABLE DOWDA SAWYER went home to be with her Lord and Savior on December 28, 2002. Born in Wake Forest on June 4, 1930 to Grady Siler and Elizabeth Lake Patterson, she was educated at Wake Forest College where she met and married Harry Clinton Dowda, who preceded her in death. Known to many of her friends as Marable, she was active in the Wake Forest Baptist Church and in the community life of Wake Forest, serving for many years as an officer and board member of the Wake Forest College Birthplace Society and the Wake Forest University Alumni Council. She is survived by her beloved husband of the last four years, John S. Sawyer, daughter Christie Dowda and her husband, Andy Ellis, a son Harry Clinton Dowda Jr., and his wife Janet; grandchildren, Barney Goldberg and his wife Rona, Clinton Barclay Dowda and his wife Jennifer, Feleisa Dowda and Drake Dowda; two great-grandchildren; sisters Sarah Barge and Peggy Rogers and a brother Grady S.
