Man, 82, shoots burglary suspect in Arundel home

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A man allegedly breaking into a Brooklyn Park home yesterday afternoon was shot and wounded by an 82-year-old resident, Anne Arundel County police reported.

Police arrested Joseph Kelly, 41, of no fixed address minutes later in the 100 block of W. First St., about 100 yards from the burglary scene. Kelly suffered a graze wound to the head and was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He was treated for a minor injury and was under police guard there last night.

Kelly was charged with one count of felony burglary.

The elderly resident - whose name was withheld - heard a noise coming from the front of his home in the 4100 block of Belle Grove Road about 2:30 p.m., and picked up a handgun before investigating, said Cpl. Charles Ravenell, a police spokesman.

According to police, the intruder had entered through a side window before the elderly man fired one shot. The wounded suspect fled as the elderly man called the police.

Ravenell said another break-in had occurred at the same house within the past week. He did not have details of the incident last night.
