Stromberg, Clara Sykes

CLARA SYKES STROMBERG,, long-time resident of Howard County, died quietly Christmas morning. Clara was born in 1914 in El Paso, Texas. She was raised in Kcarneysvill, West Virginia and attended Shepherd College where she met the late Guy Carlton Sykes, Jr. of Ellicott City, MD. The two were married in 1937 and Clara lived in Howard County until 1994 when she moved to Florida. During her life here, Clara was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church. She was a choir member and worked on many church activities. She also worked for Howard County Government for almost 30 years. During that time she was secretary to Judges James Macgill and James Clark and she spent 12 years in the county treasurers office. In 1968 she joined the executive staff under Omar Jones, the first county executive, and later worked for county executives Ed Cochran and Hugh Nickols. Her bosses always spoke highly of her saying she was always pleasant, professional, and could handle any problem. Three daughters survived Mrs. Sykes, Carol Lee Dickinson of Ridgefield, Conn., Rachel Dionne of Boston, Mass., and Kathryn Brendel of Bellflower, Illinois. There are also seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She will be cremated in Florida and a Memorial Service will be held for her at st. Johns Episcopal Church in the Spring.
