Carroll government offices to be closed for New Year's
Carroll County government offices will close at noon Tuesday and remain closed Wednesday for New Year's.
Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Thursday.
Northern Landfill and the Recycling Center will close at noon Tuesday and remain closed Wednesday.
Carroll County public libraries and senior centers will be closed Wednesday. Public schools will be closed Monday through Wednesday.
NAACP Carroll chapter installs new officers
The Carroll County chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People recently installed new officers.
John Lewis was elected president for a two-year term, succeeding Phyllis Hammond Black. A Carroll native, Lewis is active in the religious and civic communities.
The three vice presidents are: Charles Harrison, a retired FBI agent, former public school teacher and adjunct professor at Coppin State College; Joseph Murray, a Mount Airy pharmacist who is active in Westminster Church of Christ; and Bernard Jones, who works for a defense contractor and is active in the community.
Elected treasurer was Dan Schaller, information systems manager for SERRV International. Elected secretary was Mary L. Howard, who is active in her church and in a Baltimore group that offers services to women and youths.
County GOP women attend state victory party
The Maryland Federation of Republican Women recently held its annual meeting, and several members from the Carroll County Republican Women's Club attended to celebrate election victories.
Michelle Jefferson, April Rose and Carroll County club President Tanya Shewell attended.
Guest speakers for the meeting included Kendel Ehrlich, wife of Gov.-elect Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.; Ellen R. Sauerbrey, recently confirmed ambassador to the United Nations on Women's Affairs; and former Rep. Helen Delich Bentley.
Re-elected Dels. Carmen Amedori and Nancy R. Stocksdale, Judge of the Orphan's Court Dorothy Utz; and Jefferson, who is a Republican Central Committee member, are all members of the Carroll County Republican Women's Club.
The county club meets at 6:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month eight times a year at Kountry Kafe and Katering in Locust Lane, Westminster. The next meeting will be March 4. Membership is open to Republican women.
