Rodney Scott hit two foul shots with less than a minute to go to seal a 51-49 victory for No. 9 Dunbar over Norcom last night in the final of the Bethel Holiday Invitational in Hampton, Va.
Maurice Barksdale and Herman Hayes had 13 points for the Poets, who improved to 7-1 with the victory over the Portsmouth City, Va., school.
"It was a very big win," said Poets coach Eric Lee. "Anytime you can win a holiday tournament on the road it is big. It can give us momentum going into league play."
The Poets led the entire way then survived a run from Norcom, which cut Dunbar's lead to one in the waning moments of the game. But Dunbar hit five of five free throws down the stretch.
Slam Dunk to the Beach
No. 4 Spalding 51, Cardinal Dougherty (Pa.) 47: The Cavaliers (8-1) became only the second Baltimore-area team to advance to the final of the championship bracket in the tournament in Lewes, Del., with a victory over Cardinal Dougherty of Philadelphia.
The Cavaliers moved into tomorrow's 8.30 p.m. championship game and also presented 10th-year coach Mike Glick with his 200th career win.
Spalding will play the winner of last night's late game between St. Benedict's (N.J.) and St. Andrew's of Rhode Island.
"I'm ecstatic because it's a great opportunity to represent the Baltimore area in a national tournament," said Glick, who is in his fourth year at Spalding after coaching six years at Pallotti.
"We will be the underdog Monday night, but that's fine."
Rudy Gay had 15 points and eight rebounds while Will Bowers had 13 points in the win.
Crimson Tide Tournament
Dunbar (D.C.) 65, No. 15 Walbrook 57: A day after knocking off highly regarded National Christian Academy, the Warriors (5-2) held a fourth-quarter lead before fading down the stretch, losing to host Dunbar in the final.
Walbrook sophomore forward Velmar Coleman had 26 points.
Bob Pascal Tournament
Severn 70, Northeast 37: The Admirals (8-4) won the Eagles' tournament after getting 20 points from Evan Crowther-Washburn and nine from Darnell Jones.
Bristow Tournament
Gilman 55, Chapelgate 42: The host Greyhounds (8-5) rolled to their third consecutive Bristow title, led by 18 points each from seniors Mark Rohde and Victor Abiamiri.
Central High Tournament
No. 1 Douglass 78, Central 57: The Ducks (7-0) captured the tournament in Prince George's County, besting the tournament hosts with a dominant first half and balanced scoring. Tournament MVP Jermaine Bolden had 18 points, Anthony Baglin scored 14 and three more Ducks had 10 points each.
Holiday Hoopfest
Westminster 73, Parkville 61: Five players scored at least eight points for the Owls (4-2) in their win over the tournament hosts in the championship game. The Knights fell to 2-4 despite 23 points from senior guard Terry Hosley.
Lake Clifton Tournament
No. 5 Lake Clifton 61, Paul VI (Va.) 50: Several big plays - including two dunks - from senior center Kyle Garrison helped lift the surging Lakers to the tournament title.
Garrison finished with 10 points, and senior forward Tavon Nelson had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the hosts, who trailed by seven in the third quarter. Lake Clifton has won five straight.
Lansdowne Tournament
No. 18 Lansdowne 55, North County 44: Junior forward Barry Cornish scored a season-high 31 points as the Vikings (5-1) beat the Knights in the championship game.
Lions Club Classic
No. 14 Long Reach 82, High Point 67: The unbeaten Lightning got 18 points from Jared Bradford to win the title at High Point's tournament.
Manuel Gonzalez Classic
Joppatowne 42, Carver 39: Tournament MVP Brian Head scored seven of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to help the Mariners (4-2) win the tournament title at CCBC-Dundalk.
Mustang Tournament
No. 20 St. Mary's 54, C.M. Wright 47: Jeff Postell scored 22 points and Marcus Perry contributed 18 as the Saints (7-2) took the championship game over the host Mustangs (3-4).
St. John's Classic
Fordham Prep (N.Y.) 39, No. 11 Calvert Hall 35: Jack McClinton scored 22 points, but the Cardinals (8-3) fell in the consolation game in Washington.
